Hickory Chair bench-made upholstery and casegoods in a tailored interior

Bench-Made in North Carolina - Since 1911

Hickory Chair

The House

Founded in 1911 in Hickory, North Carolina, Hickory Chair is among the most enduring names in American furniture, and the tailoring reads in every seam and joint. Bench-made upholstery, refined casegoods, and a discipline the house has never let slip. Its Made For You and Made to Measure programs hand you genuine control over silhouette, finish, and scale, while long collaborations with leading designers keep the line current. Specify it where craftsmanship and customization matter in equal measure.

The Hands Behind the House

Suzanne Kasler

Suzanne Kasler

Suzanne Kasler works from Atlanta, and she has spent more than twenty years building rooms that hold a dinner party and a Tuesday evening equally well. She trained her eye on France and never quite left it. What comes back into the work is Continental proportion softened by a Southern sense of comfort.

Her Hickory Chair collection is where the couture habits show. Grosgrain ribbon trim on an upholstered edge. Slipcovers that tie rather than zip. Hardware drawn for the piece instead of chosen from a catalogue. Those are small decisions, and they are most of the distance between furniture that looks considered and furniture that is.

She has been named to the AD100 and to Elle Decor's A-List, and she designs for Visual Comfort, Lee Jofa and La Cornue alongside this. Her collection here runs past two hundred pieces, which is unusual reach for a designer line.

Mariette Himes Gomez

Mariette Himes Gomez

Mariette Himes Gomez learned the trade under Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, about as direct a line into the American decorating tradition as exists. She opened Gomez Associates in New York in 1975 and has been refining one idea ever since. She puts it plainly: she modernises the classics and classicises the modern.

In her Hickory Chair pieces that reads as restraint. A Gomez chair gives an object room to be looked at. The forms are quiet, often 1940s English in their bones, and they are drawn to sit beside what a client already owns rather than to replace it.

Architectural Digest has placed her on the AD100 and among the twenty greatest designers of all time. She has written three books about how she works.

Ray Booth

Ray Booth

Ray Booth became a partner at McAlpine in 1999 and works between Nashville and New York. He is an architect's designer. He settles how a room is built before he settles how it is furnished, and his interiors carry strong structural gestures with room left for something personal to sit against them.

His Hickory Chair work began in 2019 and has grown across four collections. The most recent, Tectonic, runs to forty-five pieces in oak with a low-sheen finish, browned steel and antique brass. The shapes explore further than the rest of the house and still hold a modern room without reading as a departure.

His book Evocative Interiors was published in 2018 and shows the residential work the furniture grew out of.
