The Designers
Thomas Pheasant has worked from Washington for more than forty years. Architectural Digest named him a Dean of American Design in 2005, and the Institute of Classical Architecture gave him the John Russell Pope Award in 2015, which tells you where his sympathies sit.
His rooms stay quiet. He starts from classical proportion, then strips the ornament back until what remains is line and material. The furniture follows. A Pheasant piece for Baker tends to be sculptural and symmetrical, free of applied detail, and it holds a room without competing for it.
The partnership with Baker passed twenty years in 2022, and the work has stayed recognisably his throughout.

Barbara Barry grew up in California with a painter for a mother, and she opened her Los Angeles practice in 1985. Her work helped set what people now picture when they picture a California interior.
She designs in a narrow register and gets a great deal from it. Soft neutrals, low contrast, spare architectural lines, with an occasional nod to nineteen thirties Hollywood and to American Craftsman joinery. The rooms read as finished rather than styled.
Her Baker collection launched in 1996 and has stayed in production since. The pieces sit as easily in a modern house as a traditional one, which is why designers keep specifying them.
