Performance Fabric: What It Is and When to Choose It

Performance fabric is upholstery engineered to resist staining, fading, moisture, and abrasion better than standard decorative cloth. Sutter & Vale carries Universal Furniture frames across its sofa collection, and many of those frames can be ordered in performance grades, making fabric choice one of the most practical decisions you will face at order time.

How is performance fabric different from regular upholstery?

The difference is in the fiber or the finish, sometimes both. Most performance fabrics use solution-dyed acrylic, olefin, or a tightly woven polyester, where color is locked into the fiber before it is spun rather than applied to the surface afterward. A spill sits on top long enough to blot away, and UV exposure does not bleach the color unevenly over time. Standard linen or cotton weaves absorb liquid quickly and can show rings, watermarks, or fading after a few years of direct light.

When does performance fabric make the most sense?

It makes sense any time the sofa will face conditions that standard fabric cannot handle well. Common situations:

  • Households with children or pets. Oils, juice, and pet dander work into looser weaves fast.
  • Rooms with significant natural light. South- or west-facing windows accelerate fading on natural fibers.
  • High-traffic living rooms or media rooms. Daily use compresses and pills standard fabric faster than performance weaves.
  • Vacation or second homes. Humid coastal air and long periods of non-use are hard on untreated cloth.
  • Indoor-outdoor transitional spaces. Some performance grades are rated for covered outdoor exposure.

The Dylan Sofa in Special Order and the Emmerson Sofa in Special Order are good examples of frames where the seat depth and cushion construction invite daily, heavy use, making fabric durability worth considering before you commit.

What do you give up when you choose performance fabric?

In most cases, very little you will notice. Earlier generations of performance fabric looked flat and felt stiff. Current weaves pass as natural cloth in most rooms. The trade-off, when there is one, is hand: a high-performance olefin will not drape or wrinkle the way linen does, so it reads as slightly more uniform up close. If an organic, lived-in texture is the point of the design, a natural-fiber slipcover construction, such as the approach used in the Filmore Slipcover range, may suit you better than a bonded performance weave.

How do you compare performance ratings across fabrics?

Look for the Wyzenbeek or Martindale rub-count rating on the specification sheet. As a general guide:

Use Level Minimum Wyzenbeek Count
Light residential 15,000 double rubs
Heavy residential 30,000 double rubs
Commercial or family 50,000+ double rubs

Ask your Sutter & Vale advisor to pull the rub count for any fabric you are considering before the order is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can performance fabric be dry-cleaned?

Most performance upholstery carries a water-based cleaning code, meaning a mild soap and water solution is the correct method. Dry-cleaning solvents can break down some protective finishes, so always check the fabric's cleaning code before using any solvent product.

Will performance fabric look different from the sample chip after a few years?

Solution-dyed fibers hold color reliably under normal indoor conditions, so fading is minimal compared to surface-printed or natural-fiber cloth. The texture and hand of the fabric should remain consistent as long as the piece is cleaned according to the manufacturer's code.

Is performance fabric available across the Universal Furniture special-order program?

Fabric availability varies by frame and by the current mill options in the program. Checking your specific frame against the available fabric grades at order time is the most reliable way to confirm what is offered, as the selection can shift as mill partnerships are updated.
