Hancock & Moore Accent Chairs: Leather Seating for the Library and Study

Hancock & Moore accent chairs are the natural choice for a library or study that expects leather to last. The North Carolina house has built to that standard since 1981. Sutter & Vale carries the full made-to-order range, from wing chairs and tufted lounge chairs to swivel desk chairs, each one benched by hand using technique the house has maintained across more than four decades.

What is the leather standard at Hancock & Moore?

The hide is the foundation of everything the house makes. Hancock & Moore selects leather to a standard most upholstery makers do not reach, then builds each piece by hand in North Carolina. The result is leather that develops character rather than showing wear.

The house offers nailhead in two gauges:

  • 5/8" MD (medium): typically run in a dense line along arm rolls and front details
  • 7/8" LG (large): typically spaced along outside backs and base rails

Both gauges can appear on the same piece, a detail visible on the house's own showroom work. Finish options include Pewter, Old Brass, French Natural, and Vintage Brass. Top-stitched seam lines appear across the line on cushion edges and seat borders, and they hold up as well as they look.

Which chairs work best for reading, conversation, or desk work?

The answer depends on how the chair will be used each day.

For a dedicated reading chair, the Barron Wing Chair gives you the high back and enclosed sides a wing chair was always designed for: blocking drafts, framing the sitter, anchoring a corner. The Barron Tufted Chair shares the same frame vocabulary with button tufting in place of the wing, which reads a little lighter against a book-lined wall.

The Laney Tufted Chair and the Jameswood Chair both suit a library vignette alongside a saddle-hide ottoman. Charcoal or caramel leather on either frame, set against botanical prints and dark wood shelving, is a composition the house has shown in its own showroom.

For desk work, the Back Gordon Swivel Rocker and the Marin Swivel Chair both move with you. Navy or charcoal leather with silver nailhead on a polished five-star base translates the club register directly into a working home office.

The Sorensen Lounge Chair and the Traveler's Chair sit closer to the lounge end of the spectrum, lower and wider, suited to a room where the chair is a destination rather than a task seat.

How do you choose a leather color for a library or study?

Start with the wood tone already in the room. Dark-stained or ebonized cases read best against caramel, saddle tan, or oxblood. Lighter cerused or natural oak opens more options: charcoal, navy, and slate blue all hold their depth without competing with pale wood grain.

Room wood tone Leather colors to consider
Dark walnut or mahogany Caramel, saddle tan, oxblood
Medium cherry or oak Charcoal, cognac, burgundy
Light cerused or painted Navy, slate blue, charcoal
Mixed or eclectic Caramel as a neutral anchor

Fabrics and additional finishes are available across the line if you want to mix leather with a second material on the same frame. Browse the full range at the Hancock & Moore collection on Sutter & Vale.
